PhD student at DTU Management Engineering

DTU Management Engineering is a new department at the Technical University of Denmark. It is a 'generic' department, which means that any student at DTU can take our courses. Our primary fields of research are innovation, product development, production management, construction process management, and sustainability. We are in the process of creating an exciting international research environment with a permanent staff of about 70 PhD students and 135 faculty members.

Research at the Department covers a broad range of subjects: a few examples of current PhD projects are 'User-oriented design of workplaces in production systems', 'Non-robust decomposition and solution of general shortest paths', 'Sustainable production: An assessment of the social and environmental dimension' and 'Decision problems in energy transmission networks in a socio-economic perspective'.

As a PhD student at DTU Management Engineering, you will have an opportunity to develop both personally and professionally in an international research environment. We offer a challenging job with exciting assignments and a highly flexible daily work environment.

From student to researcher

The PhD programme at DTU is a three-year educational programme during which you receive grant-funded pay. It is a process of learning to perform research under guidance, with the objective of training you to conduct research according to international standards, contribute to research collaborations and prepare research results within the international research community.

A PhD programme consists of:

  • an independent research project.
  • a study programme totalling 30 ECTS credit points.
  • teaching and communication activities corresponding to roughly three months of work.
  • study/research at another institution in Denmark or abroad.
  • a doctoral thesis.
  • a public defence of the thesis.

PhD student Anna Nygaard Madsen says about her work at the Innovation Systems and Foresight research section at the Department:

"I like the way you get to work independently and the opportunities you get to form a broad international network. I attended a PhD course in Maastricht in October and an international workshop in Aalborg in November, and this has given me a professional and social network with other PhD students in my field all over the world. I'm planning to study abroad at Victoria University in Melbourne, Australia, for the 2009 spring semester, and I am so looking forward to it. It will be really exciting to be part of another research environment working with the same problems that I am."

The DTU Management Engineering PhD school

DTU Management Engineering has its own PhD school, but we also collaborate with the doctoral programmes in Design and Innovation (http://www.design-forskerskole.dk/English.aspx), Residual Resources Research (http://www.3r.er.dtu.dk/) and DaRSIS, (Danish Research School for Information Systems).

In charge of our PhD school is Associate Professor Erling Havn who cooperates with Marie G. Barfoed who handles the day-to-day administration of the Department's roughly 70 PhD students. One of the tasks of the PhD school is to offer relevant PhD courses at the Department.

Funding options at DTU Management Engineering

To attract talented candidates from outside DTU, the Department broadly advertises once a year for applications for a number of grants fully funded by DTU within all the Department's fields of research. The application deadline is usually in the spring, with a view to hiring applicants the same semester.

We also have monthly internal application deadlines which we announce every six months. To be considered for one of these grants, an applicant must have at least one-third co-funding from outside the Department.

Since DTU Management Engineering will be substantially increasing the number of PhD students working at the Department over the next few years, it is also a good idea to keep an eye on our website, where we post information on the grants available.

You are always welcome to contact one of our many faculty members to discuss your ideas on a possible future collaboration. If you are not sure who to contact, feel free to call or write our PhD secretary, who will help put you in touch with someone who could serve as your supervisor.
