Engineering Knowledge Management

The engineering knowledge management group led by Saeema Ahmed-Kristensen aims to address research issues to develop methods and tools to improve the product development or innovation process and engineering products in close industrial collaboration. Our main research areas relate to transforming the intangible to tangible within the context of Engineering Design and Product Development.

In particular the group focuses upon engineering design knowledge and aims to apply research understanding to develop tools and methods to improve design synthesis, manage engineering change, provide decision support and capture, structure and reuse knowledge throughout a product’s lifecycle.

The group employs a multidisciplinary approach including computer science, engineering and psychology to tackle research projects.

Contributions have included modelling of product, process and functional relationships, a methodology to develop an ontology, a patented approach to index knowledge, Global product development guide, Game for Energy Industry and projects to investigate changes in complex engineering design products.
