The main objective of the project is to conduct research on Advanced Digital Design, in particular Design Automation, in the context of the construction industry. This includes leveraging “Industry 4.0” approaches. The Post-Doctoral Research Associate is expected to significantly contribute to the creation of an associated research program between DTU, NCC, the MADE consortium and other companies in the construction sector.
The Post-Doctoral Research Associate will be part of the division of Engineering Systems at DTU’s Management Engineering Department, closely associated with Virtual Design and Construction (VDC) at NCC and a broader industry consortium through the MADE Digital industry Network.
Responsibilities and tasks
The expectation is that digitalization will lead to a significant productivity improvement through better design coordination, higher design quality, and reduced risk during construction. Through the last years NCC has strategically developed their capabilities within VDC, where projects are designed and constructed virtually before the physical realization.
The research program is focused on a) development of approaches to translate business needs into specific requirements regarding Advanced Digital Design and Design Automation capabilities within VDC, b) development of approaches to effectively phase in Advanced Digital Design and Design Automation techniques into construction project execution, and c) leverage and exploit similar activities in the production industry in the context of “Industry 4.0” research.
Strategic development opportunities for the candidate
This research project has the strategic aim of establishing a significant research program at DTU. The overall funding framework includes, in addition to this 2-year Post Doctoral Research position, one additional 2-year PostDoc position at DTU, which may be considered to extend funding for this project if successful, and a related PostDoc project at Copenhagen Business School (CBS). Additionally, there is significant opportunity to acquire supporting industry-funded PhD projects to build a vibrant research Group.
We expect the candidate to significantly contribute to the establishment of this research program, preparing the candidate for a transition to a tenure track position.

Candidates should have a PhD degree or equivalent.
We expect the candidate to have a strong academic track record in advanced digital design practices in the construction industry, including for example virtual design practices, early design and architecture decisions, detailed design and engineering, as well as their extension and integration with the actual construction process. The candidate must have shown the ability to effectively engage with industry and other practitioner communities, and bridge between the academic and industry stakeholder communities. As the candidate will be expected to assume a leadership role in shaping the academic direction of the research program, as well as build an effective industry alliance, demonstrated leadership experience is a plus. Similarly, a prior exposure to “Industry 4.0” activities in the production sector is a plus, particularly in the design context.
Further qualifications include:
- Excellent communication skills, fluent written and oral English. Danish language skills are not required, but considered a plus if present.
- Ability to work results-driven and effectively towards self-imposed deadlines.
- Team spirit and cooperation skills
Ability to communicate results to a non-technical audience, including industry and government leadership as well as general public.

Salary and terms of employment
The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed with the relevant union. The position is full-time, with a term of two-years. The employment period starts as early as possible in 2017. There is a possibility for an additional 2 year extension.
The workplace will be at DTU Lyngby Campus, Building 424. It is located a short 10 minute drive from the premises of main industry partner, NCC, as well as the offices of the MADE industry network.
