The Department of Management Engineering at the Technical University of Denmark invites applications for a 3-year PhD position in the cross area of operations research and implementation science, starting ideally on 1 September 2018 or as soon as possible thereafter in 2018.

You will be part of the division of Management Science at DTU’s Management Engineering Department. The division of Management Science (MS) is the largest MS division in Denmark. MS is an internationally unique academic environment spanning from operations research and operations management to management of human factors and performance in implementation processes. This PhD project will be supervised by Senior Researcher Kasper Edwards and Assistant professor Charlotte Vilhelmsen.

The position is a collaboration between the Operations Research (OR) group and the Implementation and Performance Management (IPM) group, The OR group focuses on Operations Research approaches and covers all phases of the OR cycle: From problem analysis over model building to the development of new solutions methods and interpretation of the results. The IPM group aims to advance knowledge in the areas of implementation of new technology and work processes, integrating perspectives of both organizational performance and employee well-being (as both target and outcome).

This PhD is explorative and bridges operations research and implementation science. The aim is to increase user acceptance during the development of complex mathematical models for hospital ward planning and scheduling as well as solution methods for these. We envision the use of participative and qualitative methods from implementation science to inform model development. As such the PhD should develop a new method for developing planning models and test the method in a hospital ward.

The main part of the work will be performed at DTU with frequent visits to collaborating hospitals.

Responsibilities and tasks
The PhD project will consist of literature review as well as interviewing and observing hospital work to support development of mathematical planning models. Hospital staff must be engaged with prototype models to both lay the ground work for implementation and understand the interaction between staff behaviour and models.

  • Work in close collaboration with researchers from the Management Science Division
  • Present your work at international conferences
  • Discuss exciting research with brilliant colleagues at weekly research meetings Since the position is based in the intersection between the OR and IPM groups, it would be an advantage if you are interested in bridging the gap between optimisation and implementation. 

Candidates should have a master's degree in engineering or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to the master's degree in engineering.

Approval and Enrolment

Salary and appointment terms
The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed upon with the relevant union. The period of employment is 3 years.
