DTU Management Engineering is seeking excellent candidates for a PhD scholarship in the area of cyclist safety and statistical modelling. The PhD student will be attached to the division of Transport Modelling. The division includes three research groups: Network Modelling, Machine Learning, and Demand Modelling. The PhD student will be affiliated with the Demand Modelling group, and the research will be carried out in close collaboration with the Human Factor group located in the division of Technology and Innovation Management. Further, collaboration with Centre for Transport Analytics (CTA) and relevant national and international stakeholders is expected.

The purpose of the scholarship is to contribute to high-level research in the area of traffic safety with focus on bicycle accidents, how to model these using statistical models and how to assess its associated costs for society. This involves predictions in the geography, by accident and social characteristics. An additional objective is to identify the social perceived cost of accidents from the point of view of the cyclist and to derive the effect on quality-of-life and how this relate to the social cost for society.

Responsibilities and tasks
With this scholarship, the department wants to strengthen its capabilities in high-level research, teaching and public sector consultancy within accident modelling. We are seeking candidates, who are committed to high quality research, will impact the field, and can interact effectively with scholarly and industry peers.

As part of the PhD study, the candidate is expected to collaborate with external stakeholders and contribute to the wider knowledge exchange with society at large.

Qualifications
Candidates should have a master's degree in engineering, statistics, mathematic or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to the master's degree in engineering. Quantitative modelling skills are preferable.

Approval and Enrolment
The scholarship for the PhD study is subject to academic approval, and the candidates will be enrolled in one of the PhD programmes at DTU. For information about the general requirements for enrolment and the general planning of the scholarship please see the DTU PhD Guide.   

Assessment
A committee headed by Professor Jeppe Rich will assess the applicants. In the assessment, consideration will be given to the candidates’ competences in: 

  • Statistical and mathematical modelling
  • Interest in traffic safety and modelling of accidents
  • Data handling and analytics skills.
  • Survey design (qualitative/quantitative questionnaires).
  • English and one of the Scandinavian languages (spoken and written).

Salary and appointment terms
The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed with the relevant union. The period of employment is 3 years.

The workplace is at DTU´s Lyngby Campus; however, a half-year-stay at a foreign university is expected.
