DTU Management Engineering invites applicants for a 2-year Post Doc in “Complex Innovation System Architecture”, starting ideally on December 1st 2017 or as soon as possible thereafter. The project will be based in the Engineering Systems Division led by Professor Anja Maier.

The Engineering Systems division is growing fast and is characterised by a vibrant and supportive research environment with engaged staff and strong research collaborations with leading universities and industry worldwide. Our research focuses on understanding and improving the ways in which engineering systems are designed, managed, and operated throughout their life cycles. Our research spans the boundaries of 1. interdisciplinary engineering design (e.g. product design and development; systems engineering), 2. engineering project, programme and portfolio management, and 3. related policy, public engagement and strategic processes. 

The Post-Doctoral Research Associate will be part of the EURITO project, a three-year European Union Horizon 2020 research and innovation action starting in 2018, with Nesta (UK) as co-ordinator and with DTU (Denmark), FOKUS Fraunhofer (Germany), and Cotec (Spain) as project partners. EURITO´s overall objective is to enhance the design of research and innovation policies in Europe. This is to be achieved by developing a new set of system-level indicators for innovation and research activities, as well as analytics and visualisations based on open data sources and novel methods. Data sources to be mined include official and unofficial industry registries, company websites, data traces within social networking and community websites (e.g. and Twitter) generated by emergent communities of practice and other non-traditional bottom-up data sources. Methods to be applied include the use of network and content analysis, interactive data visualisation dashboards, and other methodological tools drawn from data science. DTU’s role in the consortium is centred on mapping, understanding and supporting the underlying system architectures connected to research and innovation in Europe with a particular focus on system architecture and system visualisation based on data collection and analysis both at Danish and international levels.

The Post Doc will take a lead role in co-ordinating DTU’s research- and management activities on the project. More specifically, this includes co-creation, development, and testing of new system-level indicators for research and innovation, as well as analytics and visualisations for decision-support to policy makers and other stakeholders designing complex systems. A first stage in the project will involve the identification and acquisition of suitable pilot cases and data generated in Denmark within relevant industry sectors (e.g. R&D and production including cleantech or medtech). Those cases will serve to prototype bottom-up data collection strategies, analysis methods and visualisations, e.g. in the form of dashboards, which will be iteratively validated with policy makers and other decision makers. In later stages, the results of the pilots in Denmark should be integrated and scaled-up using and contributing to the results produced by the project partners in their respective pilots across Europe.

More generally, the project will be looking at what an engineering systems perspective can offer to develop new data-driven insights for the design of regional and national research and innovation policies. This includes better integration of empirical evidence (e.g. open datasets) within the policy making process. The emphasis is on indicators, analyses and visualisations that reflect the systemic nature of the challenges that policy makers face when designing policies and that are based on bottom-up data that is at industry, regional and national levels in the context of industrial and knowledge-based activities.

In the context of the EURITO project at DTU, we will use the term system architecture as the conceptual model that defines the structure and behaviour of the complex socio-technical systems under design (e.g. for the pilot cases in the cleantech industry and/or research and innovation in medtech). The architecture is the explicit description of the system being design and analysed, and this description needs to be organised in a way that supports reasoning about the structures and behaviours of the system. As such, relevant, inclusive, timely, trusted, and open research and innovation indicators that provide such description and facilitate decision-making are crucial for policy makers. We also extend the application of these indicators beyond policy makers to other people and organisations influencing the design and evolution of complex industrial systems, which in this project in addition to relevant policy makers, are understood as the system architects for whom the indicators are being created.

Responsibilities and tasks 
The project is situated at the intersection of design, policy making, and complex systems. It will be carried out in collaboration with the above-mentioned partners across Europe.

Research activities will revolve around the design, implementation and validation of new data-driven and system-level visualisations, indicators for research and innovation, and data-analytics for engineering systems. The aim is to support policy makers and other decision makers with inclusive, timely, trusted, and open indicators and visualisations that allow for dynamic system exploration. The Post Doc will be responsible for: 

  • Technical and organisational project co-ordination of DTU’s role in EURITO, acting as the operational point of contact between DTU and other project partners.
  • Taking a lead role in the conceptualisation, procurement and co-development of data collection, visualisation and analysis tools to support DTU’s research on the EURITO project
  • Co-ordinating the contribution of the DTU team members throughout the EURITO project. This includes co-supervising two PhD candidates at DTU working on the project, on system architecture and system visualisation respectively.
  • Facilitating the co-creation process of indicators and visualisations that support policy makers and other decision makers. Stakeholders include large industry organisations, public agencies, and more generally, all those sharing the objective and mandate of designing and supporting complex industrial ecosystems for research and innovation.
  • Contributing to the dissemination of research results in both scientific and practitioner-oriented channels in coordination with project partners.

Applicants should have (or expect to obtain by the start date) a PhD degree, preferably in engineering systems, systems design, design engineering, industrial and systems engineering.

Preference will be given to those candidates with a high level of English who can demonstrate an aptitude for conceptual and empirical work, modelling and programming, visualisations of complex systems, and the confidence to network within academic, public, and commercial organisations.

  • Excellent communication skills, fluent written and oral English
  • Outstanding in analysis and synthesis
  • Well-versed in interaction with manifold stakeholders in academia, public institutions, funding bodies, industry, design- and service consultancies
  • Ability to work under deadlines with a result-driven attitude
  • Team spirit and excellent collaboration skills
  • Knowledge in academic writing in a popular language
  • Passion for and mastery of visual communication design and multimedia is a plus
  • Experience in managing research projects

Salary and appointment terms
The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed with the relevant union. The period of employment is initially with a fixed term of two-years. The employment period starts from 1 December 2017 or as soon as possible thereafter.
