Deep decarbonisation with a high share of variable renewables such as wind and solar energy sets new requirements in accordance with the depletion of current flexible ramping capabilities of the energy system. Frameworks and market designs have to be reformulated in order to enable and promote new flexibility options, including additional market couplings, grid connections, storage and active participation of renewable energy sources at the power markets.

The Energy Economics and Regulation and the Energy System Analysis groups at DTU Management Engineering together with the Integration and Planning section at DTU Wind Energy offers a position as PhD student in the area of energy economics of offshore wind and energy systems analysis of integration of renewable energy.

The Energy Economics and Regulation and the Energy System Analysis groups are part of the Systems Analysis Division, which is placed within the Department of Management Engineering at DTU. The division conducts basic and applied research within the area of energy system analysis, policy instruments, regulatory issues, energy demand, geography, economics, and climate science.

Responsibilities and tasks
We are looking for a PhD student that can contribute to our current activities in the research projects NSON-dk (North Sea Offshore Network) as well as Flex4RES.

The PhD scholarship focuses on energy policy analysis and modelling of flexible energy systems with rapidly growing shares of offshore wind. During the PhD the Balmorel energy system model will be further developed with respect to models structure, data, code, and linked to models for real time balancing. The model development focuses on flexible solutions to support integration of increasing shares of variable renewables, and on massive offshore wind and grid development. Furthermore, the research will contribute to analysis of future energy market designs and regulatory initiatives.

Your research focuses in the PhD project are to: 

  • Developing the modelling of integrating massive offshore wind power connected to meshed offshore power grids in the energy market model Balmorel.
  • Soft- or hard linking of the Balmorel energy system model using hourly resolution to models for real time balancing using minutes resolution.

and to analyse through use of the Balmorel model: 

  • Potential grid architectures and possible cost-sharing mechanisms.
  • Regulation set-ups necessary to achieve the desired grid development.
  • Impacts of market designs on system economics and optimal share of wind and solar.
  • Importance of geographical resolution, time resolution and grid representation in the Balmorel model.

The analyses might require further developments of the Balmorel model (e.g. time aggregation implementation to reduce computational time, representation of offshore grids, modelling of new flexibility solutions such as storage, links to other models).

The PhD shall employ operations research, energy system analysis, micro economic theory, regulatory economics and policy analysis. Focus will be on quantitative methods which will require solid modelling skills.

We are seeking candidates with a master's degree in economics, science or engineering.

Therefore, you are expected to cooperate and be eager to build relations with colleagues in DTU Management Engineering and DTU Wind Energy, and with other departments of DTU. In addition, you may participate in research-based public sector services and other research projects.

Qualifications
Candidates should have a master's degree in economics, science or engineering or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to the master's degree in engineering.

Approval and Enrolment
The scholarship for the PhD degree is subject to academic approval, and the candidate will be enrolled in one of the general degree programmes at DTU. For information about our enrolment requirements and the general planning of the PhD study programme, please see the DTU PhD Guide.   

Assessment
The PhD student will be selected through a competitive application process. Online applications will be screened against a set of criteria and a shortlist of candidates will be assessed in more detail by a technical committee, consisting of the supervisor team.

In addition to the above, the following further qualifications will be considered in the assessment: 

  • Strong background and interest in sustainable energy and energy systems
  • Experience within energy policy analysis from an economic perspective
  • Experience with development and application of Balmorel
  • Other relevant modelling experience
  • Experience with databases and handling big datasets
  • Experience with using and running version control systems (e.g. GIT)
  • A longer-term interest in pursuing a research career
  • Excellent writing and communication skills
  • Ability to work in an interdisciplinary and international environment as well as in a Danish and Nordic context
  • Proficient user of English

Salary and appointment terms
The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed upon with the relevant union. The period of employment is 3 years.
