The Energy System Analysis group at DTU Management Engineering offers a position as PhD student in energy system analysis in bioenergy. The project is part of DTU's engagement in the Sino-Danish university collaboration, SDC, in Beijing.

Our research combines technical and economic perspectives focusing mainly on quantitative analysis within energy research. We develop methods and models and use these for technical, economic and policy analysis at national, regional and global level.

The Energy System Analysis is part of the Systems Analysis Division, DTU Management Engineering. The division conducts basic and applied research within the area of energy system analysis, policy instruments, regulatory issues, energy demand, geography, economics, and climate science.

Responsibilities and tasks
Bioenergy makes up an important component of China's transition to a future sustainable energy system and targets have been set for power and heat from bioenergy. The aim of the project is to assess the prospects for bioenergy in the overall energy system in China. 

This includes: 

  • Mapping of biomass resources (incl. waste) and their use in China
  • Review and analyse the relevant regulatory frameworks related to bioenergy as  an energy solution towards a sustainable transition
  • Review of current state-of-the-art model frameworks and methods used to asses governmental actions regarding bioenergy and waste in the energy system Review policy alternatives in other countries, including district heating Build necessary data sets based on existing data including Chinese statistics as well as own data collection
  • Perform socio-economic analyses of bioenergy using the framework to investigate areas such as
    • Develop relevant alternatives and compare scenarios.
    • Investigate alternatives set forward by interest groups, industry, etc.
    • Establish working collaborations with relevant research units, NGOs, GONGOs, clean energy industrial initiatives and intergovernmental initiatives in China and internationally.

The PhD student is requested to stay at least 6 months in China and is expected to assist in teaching activities at SDC.

The PhD student will have a main supervisor from the Energy System Analysis group and a Chinese supervisor from CAS Institute of Science and Technology.

We are seeking candidates with a master's degree in socio-economics, science or engineering and with strong competences in energy scenario analysis, sustainable energy systems and planning.

We value knowledge sharing and cross functionality. Therefore, you are expected to cooperate and be eager to build relations with colleagues in SDC and with other institutions in China.

Candidates should have a master's degree in economics, science or engineering or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to the master's degree in engineering.

Approval and Enrolment
The scholarships for the PhD degree are subject to academic approval, and the candidates will be enrolled in one of the general degree programmes of DTU. For information about the general requirements for enrolment and the general planning of the scholarship studies, please see the DTU PhD Guide.

The PhD student will be selected through a competitive application process. Online applications will be screened against a set of criteria and a shortlist of candidates will be assessed in more detail by a technical committee, consisting of the supervisor team.

In addition to the above, the following further qualifications will be considered in the assessment: 

  • Strong background and interest in sustainable energy and energy systems
  • Experience within Chinese energy policy analysis
  • A longer-term interest in pursuing a research career
  • Excellent writing and communication skills
  • Ability to work in an interdisciplinary and international environment
  • Proficiency in Danish as well as Chinese language is an advantage

Salary and appointment terms
The salary and appointment terms are consistent with the current rules for PhD degree students. The period of employment is 3 years.
