The Division for Sustainability, Society & Economics at DTU Management offers a PhD scholarship in the Energy Economics and Modeling section (EEM). We are looking for an excellent and highly motivated PhD candidate with an interest in doing cutting-edge research in modelling future low- carbon energy systems.

The EEM section provides tools and expertise, supporting national and international policy making in the green transition of energy systems. The section offers an excellent research environment with international staff, postdocs, and PhD students.

EEM combines competences within energy economics, energy systems analyses, operation research, data science and socio-economic analysis. Models are developed, merged, and soft-linked to take advantage of strengths in disparate models and to answer questions about emerging technologies and resources scarcity, e.g. biomass, land and water. Scientific challenges include modelling stochasticity, risk and uncertainty, as well as sector coupling, including system characteristics of generation technologies, transmission, storages and flexible demands. Technical questions include how to upgrade the existing system and how to operate systems with large amounts of variable renewable energy. EEM aims to be in the forefront of open access modelling.

Responsibilities and qualifications
The PhD candidate will focus on the modelling of electricity transmission investments in future energy systems with high shares of variable renewable energy (VRE) generation and a high degree of direct and indirect electrification of the building, industry and transport sectors. The work will focus on the new potentials and challenges posed by sector coupling. The challenges arise from high shares of VRE electricity generation and significantly higher electricity demands induced by sector coupling. On the other hand, sector coupling offers flexibility to integrate VRE in terms of flexible demands as well as conversion to other energy carriers with low-cost storage options, such as large-scale heat and gas storages. The PhD project will focus on developing methods for dynamic model coupling of an electricity transmission planning model with other models representing, other sectors and vectors. For this purpose, different optimization and decomposition techniques will be tested on real energy systems. The PhD project will be conducted in close cooperation with the French Transmission System Operator, Réseau de Transport d'Électricité (RTE).  

The ideal candidate(s) should have:

  • A two-year master's degree or an equivalent academic degree
  • Relevant knowledge and experience with mathematical modelling, operational research, energy system analysis, energy engineering, mathematics, data science, or similar qualifications
  • Good programming capabilities (e.g. in C++, GAMS, Julia, Python or similar)
  • Experience with energy system analysis (e.g. with Balmorel, Antares, TIMES or similar)
  • Fluency in English (working language) is a requirement.
  • Good communication skills
  • A willingness and desire to ambitiously engage in interdisciplinary collaboration and master new scientific disciplines

Documented experience within the abovementioned topics is not required but is an advantage.

You must have, or be about to receive, a two-year master's degree (120 ECTS points) or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to a two-year master's degree.

Approval and enrolment
The scholarship for the PhD degree is subject to academic approval, and the candidate will be enrolled in one of the general degree programmes at DTU. Salary and appointment terms
The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed upon with the relevant union. The period of employment is three years.

The successful candidate(s) are expected to start in the autumn of 2022 (or as soon as possible thereafter). The position is a full-time position. A few periods of several weeks in RTE offices in Paris will be planned during the PhD.
