DTU Management at the Technical University of Denmark invites applications for a 3-year PhD position in the Network Modelling group in the Transport division of the Department of Technology, Management and Economics (DTU Management) at DTU. The division conducts research and teaching in the field of traffic and transport planning and appraisal, with particular focus on behaviour modelling, network modelling, machine learning and simulation, transport economics and safety.

The topic of the project concerns behavioral modelling of bicyclists in the transport network with particular focus on long-distance and e-bicyclists preferences. Cities all over the world are currently investing in bicycle infrastructure. However, bicyclists are generally under-prioritized or completely overlooked in strategic transport models used in city-level mobility planning, which makes it difficult to prioritize funding for bicycle transport and adapt the network to different types of bicycle users. This project seeks to improve the methodological progress, digital networks and real-life observations relevant for the modelling of bicyclists as this is far from as developed as other transport modes, e.g. cars and public transport.

Responsibilities and tasks
The aim of the project is to develop state-of-the-art behavioral realistic route choice models for bicyclists, which at a detailed level takes into account both network characteristics, individual characteristics and bicycle type as well as temporal variations such as weather and bicyclists stress level (e.g. from congestion).

The project is part of a larger project regarding cyclist’s behavior with focus on long-distance trips and e-bikes including also Israel Institute of Technology (Technion). The candidate will work closely together with the supervisory team and researches from Technion and will be take part in both data collection, preparation of digital road network characteristics, methodological development, modeling preparations such as alternative generation and in developing the final models.

During the project, we will give methodological contributions within digital network preparation, passive and active data collections, model preparation and by formulating a disaggregate theoretically well-explained model for bicyclists behavior. Specifically, the tasks for the candidate and the supervisory team include:
 
  • Preparation of digital network characteristics, primarily GIS data for Tel-Aviv and Copenhagen which will serve as main digital infrastructure for the processing, analysis and modelling of cycling routes
  • Collection of new long-distance and e-cycling data in Tel-Aviv and Copenhagen by using an application developed within the project and post processing of these data.
  • Quantitative data analyses to model the effects of both network specific and individual specific factors on the bicyclist’s route choice with particular focus on individual characteristics and differences between short and long distance trips and conventional and e-bike users.
  • Analyse and model how improved bicycle facilities may change mode choice and travel behavior in general
  • Prepare manuscripts for high level journal publication
Qualifications
Candidates should have a two-year master's degree (120 ECTS points) or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to a two-year master's degree. The degree should be within Transportation Modelling, Applied Mathematics and Statistics, Data Science, Behavioural Studies, or related;
  • Excellent background in statistics and probabilities is required
  • Skills in geoprocessing tools, e.g. ArcMap is preferedExcellent programming/data management capabilities are preferable, e.g. in SAS, R or Python.
  • Transportation modelling disciplines in the education background are preferable
The following soft skills are also important: 
  • Good communication skills in English, both written and orally
  • Willingness to engage in group-work with a multi-national team
Approval and Enrolment

Salary and appointment terms
The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed upon with the relevant union. The period of employment is 3 years.
