The DTU Management department (DTU MAN) at Technical University of Denmark invites applications for a 3-year PhD position in the area of hybrid work and virtual collaboration in Danish municipalities, starting October 2022, or as soon as possible thereafter in 2022. The position is part of a joint alliance research project between Technion (Israel), HK Trade union and DTU. The PhD student will be part of the division of Management Science at DTU Management. The position is affiliated to the Implementation and Performance Management section (IPM) that aims to advance knowledge on the implementation of new technology and work processes, integrating organizational performance and employee well-being.

During the COVID-19, many people experienced working from home, and currently public offices are implementing different hybrid work models. The SPACE project (Social capital and distance work) investigates how hybrid work influence the organizational social capital. As part of this project, further investigation about the use of virtual collaboration in hybrid work is needed. Therefore, this PhD project will investigate how organizations can build capacity for hybrid work and virtual collaboration, and what impact this has on the potential for wellbeing and performance.

Responsibilities and qualifications
The PhD project answers to scholarly calls of further research into hybrid work and virtual collaboration. By combining qualitative and quantitative research, the PhD project should address questions such as:

  • How is hybrid work implemented in public offices?
  • How does virtual collaboration influence wellbeing at work and performance?
  • What are the behavioral implications of ubiquitous data collection as part of hybrid work?
  • How can public workplaces organize supporting virtual collaboration for the hybrid work?

As a PhD student, you will: 

  • Be responsible for conducting your own research project
  • You will teach and supervise engineering students at both DTU and Technion
  • Contribute to new knowledge about virtual collaboration in hybrid work
  • Strive to publish your work worldwide in recognised journals
  • Work in close collaboration with researchers from the Management Science division and Technion
  • Present your work at international conferences and seminars
  • Discuss exciting research with IPM colleagues at weekly research meetings

This PhD project will be supervised by Associate Professor Christine Ipsen, Associate Professor Kathrin Kirchner, and Senior Researcher Kasper Edwards, with Assistant Professor Dina Tsybulski from Technion as co-supervisor. The project includes recurrent visits to and an extended research exchange stay at Technion, Israel.

As a PhD student on this project, the following qualifications will be included in the assessment of the candidates:

  • Demonstrated ability to conduct group interviews in Danish workplaces
  • Preferably experience with mixed methods research
  • Previous collaboration and knowledge about the Danish public sector
  • Ability to collect data in a Scandinavian language

You must have a two-year master's degree (120 ECTS points) or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to a two-year master's degree.

Approval and Enrolment
The scholarship for the PhD degree is subject to academic approval, and the candidate will be enrolled in one of the general degree programmes at DTU. Salary and appointment terms
The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed upon with the relevant union. The period of employment is 3 years.
