Organisation studies and advanced technology

Studying

How are advanced technologies shaping strategic management and organisational practice? We engage in both theoretical development (such as strategic resilience, hybrid work and algorithmic management) and application engineering (including the use of robots, eye-tracking and digital twins at work). The research contexts cover private and public organisations within multiple domains such as health care, biotech and big science.

The particular strengths of the research focus on understanding advanced technologies and their impact on management. We not only study technological impact, but also develop technological applications help make work inclusive. This capacity to work with organisational studies and management practice, together with technological applications, gives our research its academic and societal depth. Methodologically, our research includes both qualitative and quantitative research approaches, together with experimental and intervention studies. Our focal research areas include:

Organisational performance

  • Experimental interventions in diverse organisational contexts (such as health care)
  • Researching unique or collaborative organisational settings (such as Big Science)
  • Development of assessment and intervention tools for sustainable management to balance employee and managerial well-being with performance expectations
  • Studying the future of (hybrid) work including time and space, in terms of managerial role or innovation impact

Advanced technology and management practice

  • Studying artificial intelligence's impact on management practice (including algorithmic management and human digital twins)
  • Applying skilled engineering to make work more inclusive, including developing prototypes that benefit from emergent technologies such as gaze interaction

Leadership for the future

  • Enhancing leadership capabilities towards sustainability in terms of environmental impact
  • Developing cross-disciplinary, integrative knowledge for senior scientists and chief technology specialists to enable future innovation
  • Developing principles for leading strategic resilience within organizations
