Keynote "The Ambivalent Life of the Brain" by Martyn Pickersgill
DTU Management is thrilled to invite you to a keynote by sociologist Martyn Pickersgill (University of Edinburg) about “The Ambivalent Life of the Brain in the 21st Century” taking place at Medical Museion on 27 June 3 pm, followed by a Q&A and reception. The event is a collaboration between DTU, KU, and the University of Amsterdam.
Knowledge about the brain has become ubiquitous in many domains of biomedicine, illness experience, and everyday life. But neuroscience and -technology also faces substantial scepticism and even resistance. In this keynote, Martyn Pickersgill will track down this ambivalent life of the brain in society by drawing on over a decade worth of research in the social study of the neurosciences. In doing so, he will also critically reflect on this ambivalence, and what it means for sociological research going forward.
Martyn Pickersgill is a professor in the Sociology of Science and Medicine at the University of Edinburgh. He is a leading scholar in the social study of neuroscience and has published extensively on the circulation of neuroscientific knowledge in a variety of medical domains, such as psychiatry and epigenetics. His keynote will be followed by a Q&A with Louise Whitely, Associate Professor in Medical Science Communication at the Medical Museion.
