November this year, Sotiria Lagouvardou received the "Young Researcher" award from DTU at the PhD graduation ceremony.
Lagouvardou completed her PhD on “Market Based Measures for Sustainable Shipping” under the supervision of Professor Harilaos N. Psaraftis. In her thesis, Lagouvardou demonstrated a significant risk of carbon leakage in a new directive put forward by the EU’s Emission Trading Scheme.
By modelling the shipping lines’ transshipment hub relocation problem through a cost-benefit analysis, Lagourvardou discovered that shipping hubs just outside the EU Emission Trading Scheme become attractive alternatives as they can offer relatively lower carbon prices compared to the EU scheme. Without appropriate policies, switching hubs would lead to carbon leakage, penalization of EU hubs, as well as lost revenue for the EU Emission Trading Scheme.
In May 2023, Sotiria Lagouvardou was also awarded the prestigious “Young Researcher of the Year 2023” by the International Transport Forum (ITF) for these findings.
Lagouvardou completed her PhD with a powerful motivation of making maritime transport more sustainable, and she will be continuing that work as a postdoc at DTU Management. She is fully intent on remaining at the forefront of creating a more sustainable future, combining her technical expertise of the maritime with her commitment to the environment.
