This month, at this year's public transport conference hosted by TØF - Transportøkonomisk Forening, Postdoc Gülin Göksu Başaran from DTU Management received the RA Foundation research award.
Gülin receives the award based on the industrial PhD project on “Passenger Behaviour, Terminal Design and Urban Surroundings for Attractive Public Transport”. The project was supported by Innovation Fund Denmark and a collaboration between DTU Management and Metroselskabet. The thesis explored how the areas surrounding different forms of public transport, such as train stations and bus stops, impact the behaviour and experience of travellers, with the purpose of increasing the use of public transport while also ensuring a safe and sustainable environment in the surrounding areas.
The project sheds light on key issues that need to be addressed to promote the use of public transport. Significant factors, such as large distances to destinations from stations, cause many passengers to choose transport by car instead of train or bus. Dedicating large areas around the stations to car parking also creates desolate environments, which can cause unease for travellers. Therefore, incorporating accessibility and security to and from stations is crucial.
The RA Foundation has also commented on Gülin’s award:
”Gülin Göksu Başaran receives RA Foundation Research award 2025 for an academic work of high scientific and methodical quality, which consists of five articles, whereas multiple have already been published in well-renowned, international articles”.
As postdoc at DTU Management, Gülin is continuing her research in the field of urban planning and sustainable mobility. She is motivated by working closely with practitioners from cities and public transport companies, creating knowledge that can be directly applied to improve urban planning and public transport.
Congratulations, Gülin!
