1 November 2012, DTU management Engineering welcomed two new professors within the division for Management Science. The two new professors are Stefan Røpke and Jesper Larsen.
Management Science uses advanced methods in order to develop IT based systems for the support of decisions within the private as well as the public sector. The usage of these systems concerns everything from planning of international transportation and logistics to the planning of operations and staff at hospitals. With the two new professors, DTU will have one of the strongest research environments with deep theoretical anchoring, a wide contact to the industry, the maritime world and public institutions in Northern Europe. At the same time, the education within Operations research will be strengthened and thus a wide range of courses to all engineering students will be offered as well as more specialised courses for future research candidates.
Stefan Røpke
Stefan Røpke obtained his PhD in Computer Science from the University of Copenhagen in 2006. From thereon, he was employed at the Université de Montreal in Canada before returning to Denmark in 2008 for a position as associate professor at DTU Transport.
Stefan’s research focuses on the development of algorithms to the solution of problems within operations research. Especially, his research focuses on algorithms for the planning of distribution of freight. He produces world class research where his algorithms are being used in the industry to reduce fuel consumption in order to benefit companies’ financial as well as environmental bottom line.
Currently, Stefan is involved in a project regarding the planning of freight transportation with vehicles in cooperation with several Danish transportation companies.
Jesper Larsen
Jesper Larsen obtained his PhD in Operations Research from the Technical University of Denmark in 1999. From thereon, he worked on an EU project focused on aviation before he became an associate professor at DTU Informatics in 2003. He has been guest researcher at the University of Auckland and Linkøbing University. Since 2009, Jesper additionally has been Director for the Master’s programme in Management Engineering.
Jesper Larsen focuses on operations analysis where he works with the construction of effective mathematical models and algorithms primarily within the planning of transportation and the planning of staff. His research has its starting point in complex problems where optimal planning requires advanced methods and will often take place based on specific problems in Danish and foreign companies.
Currently, Jesper works with robust planning as part of the Danish Council for Strategic Research project RobustRails which focuses on different planning problems within railway operation. Jesper also focuses on airports where he works with complex planning problems that are characterised by tight deadline, logistic challenges and many stakeholders.
