The cost of damage: Coastal residents pay a heavy price for storm surges

A new analysis from DTU shows that households affected by storm surges incur significant out-of-pocket costs and spend hundreds of hours on clean-up and reconstruction – in addition to government compensation. Furthermore, almost 40 per cent of the owners have experienced physical or mental consequences.

Storm surges hit residents along the coast and in low-lying areas hard. During the storm surge in 2023, Morten Mortensen’s summer home near Vilstrup and Diernæs in Southern Jutland was affected. Photo: Mads Claus Rasmussen/Ritzau Scanpix.
