Access to data

TU is financed as a partnership with a number of sponsoring partners (see them on the lower page of What is the Danish National Travel Survey). These partners have free access to the data.

Other organisations, companies, etc., who wish to make use of the TU-data are always welcome to contact us for information on prices, terms and conditions. Please enquire by email at turequests@transport.dtu.dk or by phone to project manager Hjalmar Christiansen at (+45) 45 25 65 08.

Results available for the general public

Results at a national level are available free of charge from our homepage:

  • Main results at the national level are published in the yearly report. (older reports in Danish, only)
  • Selected results are published in our factsheets and other publications. Most of these are in Danish, only.

We are happy to answer simple questions. Please enquire by e-mail turequests@transport.dtu.dk. All published results may be cited freely, provided that the Danish National Travel Survey and DTU is stated as source. Reference can be made by 10.11581/dtu:00000034.

Researchers, students and the media

Special terms for researchers, students and the media:

We are happy to provide few, simple results/cross tabulations as free academic, free student or free media service.

Terms and conditions for the free academic/media/student service:

  • The service is discretionary, available as our limited resources last.
  • The service is conditional, that you are equally helpful to our researchers and students.
  • It is a clear requirement, that DTU and the Danish National Travel Survey is stated as source, wherever the results are used.
  • The results are delivered “as-is”, with no guarantees or liabilities.

The free service is available for simple extracts only. These are extracts, which are not very detailed and can be drawn with little effort from our database. Generally, free extracts cannot be more geographically detailed than the regional level.

If you need greater detail or larger amounts of data, please read below on paid extracts of the data.

If you are planning a research project at another university or research institution, then we can recommend including DTU as research partner within the project. In this case, usage of the TU data can be part of the DTU contribution to the project. Please make connections with relevant research staff at DTU. Observe that the TU data cannot be the only DTU contribution to the project, when DTU is a research partner.

Paid extracts of the database

We sell data and results on commercial basis:

  • This covers custom datasets for a specific purpose based on a written specification (normally via email).
  • The fee covers access to data and time used to generate the dataset.
  • The cost typically ranges from about 10,000 DKK. for a relatively simple dataset - and up to 50-60,000 DKK when the datasets are complex, covering large amounts of data and requires a large amount of time to generate the dataset.
  • Usually results are delivered as an Excel spreadsheet accompanied by a short technical explanation.

Please enquire by sending your request / data needs to e-mail turequests@transport.dtu.dk.

  • Supplied data is intended for the use of the recipient only.
  • Raw data and results may not be passed on to other parties or made public on websites without DTU's prior agreement.
  • Data can be used for analysis purposes, reports etc. which are made public in printed form - including download of reports from websites etc.
  • The results are delivered “as-is”, with no guarantees or liabilities.
  • Use of TU-data in projects involving both TU-partners and non-partners must be approved by DTU.
  • The Danish National Travel Survey (”Transportvaneundersøgelsen”) and DTU should always be stated as the source.
  • Please, send an electronic version (or download link) of any significant public reports, articles or similar using the data to turequests@transport.dtu.dk.

Uncertainty of results

TU is a sample-based interview survey and thus all results contains statistical uncertainty. Please beware, that the standard functions for variants / confidence intervals / significance in the various statistical packages are not suitable for the TU weighting methods and will give misleading / incorrect uncertainty estimates. The variance can be estimated by a series of bootstrap simulations, which are supplied with the database.

In addition to statistical uncertainty, there may be errors in single observations of data. DTU spends considerable resources on quality assurance of TU data, but given the size of the survey, it can be said with great certainty that the database contains a number of undetected single errors. If, when working with data, you discover errors or inconsistencies, please inform us by e-mail at turequests@transport.dtu.dk. We will then use the information to improve the forthcoming datasets.
